How long will it take to get a tan?
Everyone's skin is different, and the tanning process occurs at different speeds depending on a person's skin type. Those with darker complexions usually tan faster than those with fair skin. As a general rule, 10-15 consecutive sessions will give you a base tan (every other day, but not more than 5 times a week). How long it takes to get a tan also depends on whether or not you use an indoor tanning product to maximize the tanning results from UV exposure.

Take it slow:
Remember it's not a race. Overexposure will hinder the results you want to see, so exercise moderation. Island Tan's tanning consultants are certified to administer session times suitable for your skin type, and will assist you in determining a competent exposure schedule.

Why should I use indoor tanning lotions?
Sundash 252Indoor tanning lotions are specifically formulated for indoor use, and enhance melanin production, as well as hydrate and condition the skin. When tanning, dry skin reflects light, not allowing UV rays to be absorbed as quickly as when using a lotion. By using a lotion you are allowing more UV light to penetrate your skin more quickly, which can develop a more natural looking tan up to 60% faster. Dry skin is not healthy skin; by keeping your skin in optimum condition, you will tan darker, faster, and stay taned longer.

I always put my lotion on at home before I come to the salon. Is that ok?
It is best if you apply the lotion to your skin right before you get into the tanning bed. This ensures maximum moisturization for better magnification.

Why do I have to use eyewear?
The potential risk of eye injury from unprotected UV exposure is serious and real. The skin on your body is the thinnest around the eyes; UV light can easily penetrate this skin, causing burns, cataracts, poor night vision or possible permanent loss of sight. Repeated, unprotected exposure to UV light may cause long-term damage to your eyes. That is why we require tanners to use eyewear every time they tan. Remember, you only have one set of eyes. Take good care of them!

How do I prevent "raccoon eyes"?
Adjusting the protective eyewear occasionally during a tanning sessions will help to minimize this condition. The adjustment can be performed by gently sliding the eyewear to a new position. You should never lift the eyewear off of your eyes to adjust their position. We are also able to airbrush the effect of Raccoon eyes away. Please consult with a Tanning Technician.

Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD)
The National Institute of Mental Health has produced evidence that the shortage of sunlight during winter produces clinical tanned legsdepression in millions of people. Exposure of sunlight or simulated sunlight for 10-20 minutes once or twice a week show a 70% improvement in patients with Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD). Light treatment is the only known cure for the "winter blues."
